Three weeks ago, I sent out an email announcing a gang of new CNN assignments I was excited about. I hit send, and headed out for a beautiful hike with my friend and fellow writer, Jacqueline Kehoe. Later that day, my little brother’s body was found in his apartment. He was 36.
As you can imagine, I am devastated and I’m so grateful that I have an amazing sister to help me plan the funeral. My brother struggled with a heroine addiction for over a decade but he had been clean for 14 months and we were extraordinarily proud of him. He was making all the right choices but it wasn’t enough. His arteries were clogged, his heart was enlarged, and the medical examiner says he likely died of a heart attack, which is how my father died when he was 39.
I stayed with my family in Wisconsin for two weeks before flying back to New York with my mom so she could attend the first annual Parkinson’s charity bike ride that I organzied. Thank you to those of you that donated prizes. We raised nearly $2,000.
Tomorrow, I fly back to Milwaukee for my brother’s funeral this weekend, where I’ll be until shortly before I go to Slovenia in early May.
My brother-in-law is undocumented and we just learned that he has to go back to Mexico next week to petition to return legally. He could be there for weeks, months, or years. As such, I plan to spend a lot of time in Wisconsin in the coming months, caring for my mom and helping my sister with the kids.
Why am I sharing all this? Because this is real life. And because I can’t deal with press releases and PR pitches right now. I’m working with a handful of editors at CNN, Forbes, and World Nomads to get low-stress assignments that I am comfortable working, mostly reviews about products I already own and articles about destinations I’ve already visited. I don’t envision having the capacity to send out pitch calls or review the hundreds of pitches I normally receive every week for at least a few months. I also asked several of my editors to reassign some of the pieces I hadn’t started yet. Who cares about the best binoculars for birdwatching when your brother is dead?
I have a lot of insider tips, pitch guidelines, and strategy emails already written for my paid subscribers so I’ll resume sending those out soon. April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, so, like last year, I had also planned to offer free paid membership to anyone that donates over $50 to Parkinson’s charities (or to my Venmo to forward on), so I hope to get that email out this week as well.
Thank you for understanding.
Cassandra
